3 simple and refreshing whiskey cocktails that are perfect for the end of summer
Who said whiskey was reserved for cold weather? Mixed using the right ingredients and techniques, it can be just as thirst-quenching as its clear spirit counterparts - without sacrificing any of its unique aroma and flavors.

The following concoctions are perfect to enjoy the last summer rays.

Mint Julep

Along with the Mojito, the Julep is the king of mint-based cocktails. Originating centuries ago in the deep South, this cocktail keeps it simple, made from nothing but sugar, water, crushed ice, mint leaves and, of course, bourbon. The combination of earthy spirits and sweet, refreshing mint will keep you coming back for more.

Gently muddle a handful of mint leaves into a highball glass with 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 tablespoon water. Fill the glass with cracked ice, add 2 oz bourbon and stir well until the glass is very cold. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and serve.

Summer Rye

This elderflower cocktail is aptly named – it’s a fresh, sweet drink that will always put you in the spirit of the warmer months. St-Germain, rye whiskey, sugar, lemon juice, apple juice and champagne mix to create a rich cocktail that’s perfect for lazy afternoons.

Combine 1 1/2 oz rye whiskey, 3/4 oz St-Germain, 1 oz apple juice and 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into an ice-filled highball glass. Top with chilled champagne and garnish with apple cubes or a thin apple slice.

Whiskey Shandy

Like sunshine in a glass, this spiked version of a summertime classic combines the citrus notes of Irish whiskey with sweet and zesty lemonade andice-cold beer. Name a more refreshing drink, we’ll wait.

Combine 1 1/2 oz Irish whiskey with 1 1/2 oz lemonade into an ice-filled shaker. Shake well until very cold and strain into a pint glass with some ice cubes. Top with 8 oz cold beer, stir gently and garnish with a lemon wheel.
