These Ballantine’s 12 Year Old creative cocktails are ideal for entertaining. Most of them you can build in the glass – there’s only one here where you even need a shaker – and you’ll have most of the ingredients to hand anyway. They’re all refreshing, cooling drinks too, just right for long, hot days when you’re looking for something more adventurous than that ubiquitous Pimm’s Cup to accompany your summer barbecue. And these cocktails are perfect for introducing novice whisky drinkers to the category. If someone is more used to vodka-based drinks, for example, these long, fruity concoctions will gently introduce them to the nuance of Ballantine’s 12 Year Old without intimidating them. Better still, by serving them alongside food, you can also demonstrate that the honey, spice, oak and sweetness of the whisky are an excellent foil for grilled meats and charcuterie. We’d recommend picking one or two recipes from this collection to give your guests a choice, and doing a bit of preparation such as pre-squeezing and bottling fresh lemon and lime juice, or making a simple purée or sugar syrup in advance if the recipe calls for it, and making artful little garnishes to save time later. Then all you need to do is gather Ballantine’s 12 Year Old and the rest of your ingredients along with some glasses, pitchers and plenty of ice, and you’ve created a mini-bar that’s just right for preparing beautiful drinks at speed, with the minimum of effort.
