Bar Cuba @ Union Hotel
May 11, 2018
You might think Bar Cuba’s chief boast is that it offers one of the world’s largest selections of rum. But you’d be wrong – contrary to what you might think, it’s not overrun by pirates (though that actually sounds quite fun, or maybe that’s just us). Located on the first floor of the Union Hotel, this place positively oozes sophistication, with its gleaming white marble bar, chandeliers and velveteen couches. What’s more, there’s a waiter service so you can be spared the labour of getting up those seats really are very comfortable. Bar Manager Chris Beaumont knows his stuff and is unsurprisingly an authority on the finer points of rum and you might need some help, as the rum menu runs into pages and can be slightly daunting to the novice. An extensive cocktail menu includes all of the classics you expect and some interesting signature drinks (and, don’t worry, there’s plenty on offer if rum isn’t your tipple of choice). We’re taken by the Warhead (green apple vodka, pomegranate liqueur and cranberry juice) or the Gin Smash, which mixes gin and apple schnapps to great effect. If you want a kick to your drink, an espresso martini is just the thing, and there’s also a nice selection of champagne cocktails for those who love their fizz. But it’s the rum that’s the star here, so we’d recommend asking their expert advice and plumping for something a little special from the very long list on offer. A stylish setting and great drinks? It’s small wonder then that Bar Cuba has long been the destination of choice among Adelaide’s smart set, many of whom can be seen trying to look unruffled while draped on the banquettes of a Friday night.
