The Amstel Hotel is one of the most luxurious establishments in Amsterdam, what with its Michelin-starred restaurant Riva and its general air of elegance and exclusivity. The sleek 5 star hotel has recently opened the A Bar, a gleaming, chic space with black leather walls and splashes of chrome and cream. Everything about it is polished and glossy, the epitome of the high end hotel bar. It’s not as anonymous as some though, with a food and drink menu focusing on local flavours and Dutch liqueurs making sure you don’t forget which city you’re in. For the summer months, the drinks list showcases long and refreshing tipples like the aromatic Lavender Gin Flip, a mix of Dutch gin, lavender syrup and orange bitters, and the Downfall Julep, which features aged genever as a base spirit. Their barrel aged Negroni, which spends several weeks sitting in American oak barrels, is designed for two to share and they do a spot-on Martinez (one of our favourite classic cocktails). The bar also stocks a wide range of spirits, both local and world renowned brands as well as some real rarities and a selection of Dutch bar snacks, including the ubiquitous bitterballen. On summer evenings grab a table on the outdoor terrace, ideal for relaxing with a cocktail in the sun while soaking in the views of the Amstel river. The bar also features a state of the art sound system and a regular local DJ programme, making it a popular spot on weekends.
