Situated on the bustling Utrechtsestraat near the majestic Herengracht, Brug 34 is a versatile space offering ß-coffee by day drinks by night.ß- It does both things well. The interior is light, bright and airy, a contemporary urban space which boasts a cool coffee shop feel during the day; it’s the kind of place where you can order a decent latte and hang out with laptop or the daily papers. But the space is also stylish enough to make a good evening destination, an agreeable spot for a relaxed after-work drink. The bar stocks a small but well-chosen list of affordable wines by the glass and serves a good range of snacks and lunch dishes, sandwiches, soups and the like, as well as a range of tasty cakes and pastries. The coffee is reasonably good quality, the atmosphere is hip but also laid-back, the large windows make it great for people-watching, and they’ve recently opened smart B&B-style accommodation in the upstairs part of the building. If you need a reasonably priced place to stay in the city, it’s worth checking out: the rooms are stylish, white and light, designed with same clean elegance as the bar below. In a part of town not short of cafes and bars, this place stands marks itself out.
