With a name that basically means the ‘living room’ De Huyschkaemer is one of the most welcoming spots on the hip Utrechtsestraat. This is a cosy and homely place, relaxed and laid back, popular with students and locals for its laid-back vibe. There are comfy sofas and armchairs to lounge in up on the mezzanine level and the usual scattering of tables and chairs on the ground floor. The atmosphere is convivial and friendly, warm in more ways than one it can get pretty toasty inside when it’s busy. It’s this cosiness that draws the crowds as this is in many ways a conventional Amsterdam bar-café serving a decent if unspectacular selection of beers and some decent if unexciting food. The bar hosts regular pub quizzes, and occasionally shows sport on the big screen. It’s that kind of place. The staff are young and genial and the bar has a terrace onto which people spill in summer nights. It might not be a destination venue, but it makes a great place to kick-start an evening or just to hunker down with a beer and a group of friends and enjoy the homely atmosphere sometimes that’s all you want and all you need.
