This place is properly glam. People dress up for a night at Lion Noir on Gay Street and rightly so: it’s a sumptuous space, low light and dark green walls, soft brown banquette seating with a few pieces of tasteful taxidermy dotted about the room. It’s hugely atmospheric in the best possible sense and also boasts pavement seating for summer sipping, another plus. The drinks are delish. The Lion Nicer is a potent combination of rum, bitters and orange, simple but excellent. They also do a solid take on the modern classic that is the Pornstar Martini and various refreshing long drinks. The Mount Lionjito is a winner in this respect, zingy and green, and they also have a good range of wine. The kitchen dishes out contemporary and inventive European food, attractively presented. Think swordfish with red pepper salsa and quinoa, or succulent suckling pig with peas and gnocchi. Prices are on the high side admittedly but the place has a theatrical and rather romantic air to it which makes the extra splurge more than worth it.
