Just a few blocks from Amsterdam’s world famous historic center lies a district of the city called Oud West, a place where hip new markets rub shoulders with old canals and coffee shops, and some of the best new bars in the city reside. Case in point is Bar Karakter, a venue brought to life by two friends who love making high quality cocktails but might just love offering Amsterdam a place to have a sophisticated yet laidback night out even more. The aesthetic at Bar Karakter has a, shall we say, rock star dressing room vibe, with brown leather Chesterfields, Persian rugs, a giant Mexican skull on the wall, and even tables on wheels that look precisely like band equipment. There’s also a rough brick wall plastered with script that says ‘if these bricks could talk’ in a cool ‘80s glam-script and the front of a car around a corner. Yes, it’s definitely a good times kind of place, and each night the party gets rock-n-rolling here. Don’t let any of the fun fool you though, because the aforementioned founders of Bar Karakter can mix up cocktails with the absolute best in Amsterdam (one has even received exclusive international cocktail training), and they offer a menu that is both accomplished and a joy to drink. Also available are traditional Dutch bar bites, which pair up perfectly with the cold beer on tap.
