Brandstof, which takes its name from the fire station opposite incidentally, the word ‘brandstof’ means fuel is a hip, chilled affair where locals can and moreover do unwind after a hard day at the wind-mill. Its chief boasts is its a vast terrace. Something of a sun trap in the summer months, it makes a super spot for lingering with a cold beer (or two, or three) and soaking up the atmosphere. If then you can snag a spot out here, you should. But if the weather or the madding crowd force you inside, you’ll find yourself in a stylish and trendy surroundings. What first strikes one are two unusual street lamps over the bar. It’s populated by an easy-on-the-eye cast of young creative types. Run by team behind Struik, the bar serves a good selection of Dutch and international beers, not to mention a range of small plates and larger dishes, though in all conscience one has to say that the food here is competent rather than outstanding; there’s a decent if limited selection of wines too, but again it’s not the bar’s strong suit. It’s the relaxed vibe and the lure of the terrace which keeps people coming back and makes this such a welcome addition to the neighbourhood and indeed to WBB.
