What was once a gas factory has been converted into a fashionable bar-cum-event space with a huge sun-streaked terrace area the ideal place to chill out with a drink on a warm Amsterdam evening. Roest (the Dutch word for rust) has a kind of low-fi, shabby-chic feel about it, the surrounding area is urban, industrial, and the bar is like a kind of oasis among the decay, a beach in the midst of the city, a place to sit by the water and unwind. That’s not to say it’s dull, nothing could be further from the truth – there’s always something going on here, from beer-fuelled Oktoberfest parties, to Brazil-inspired carnival nights. There are alternative food and art markets, exhibitions. film and theare, even a hairdresser. At heart Roest is a creative place with an alternative ‘anything goes’ vibe, at its best it’s a place of collaboration and idea-sharing. Every visit is different, that’s the beauty of it. It’s a place not just to drink though of course that’s part of it – but to participate, to mingle and be inspired.
