Up on the seventeenth floor which in a comparatively flat city like Amsterdam is quite a height – of the Ramada Apollo Centre in the west of the city, you’ll find this most pleasant of rooms with a view. Looking out over the rooftops and canals of Amsterdam, the décor is retro futuristic in an unintentional but rather charming way, with cute purple bar stools arrayed around a central counter and lots of glass so you can better appreciate the views. The bar offers a decent range of cocktails, including the Dutch Explorer, which contains a good glug of that traditional Dutch spirit Bols jenever, a kind of precursor to gin. The signature Floor17 cocktail is a delicate floral affair and the bar tenders will happily whip you up a classic cocktail if you ask nicely. There’s a range of beers and wines available and if you’re as partial to a glass of fizz as we are then you’ll be glad to know they offer a good selection of champagnes including the house bubbles, which are known as Zarb. There’s a good range of serviceable if unexciting bar snacks including house burger and other usual suspects: Caesar salad, club sandwiches and the like. It’s the view out over the city that’s the big draw here, one of the best panoramas you’ll find in these parts.
