As the latest hip-and-happening hotel to open on Amsterdam’s illustrious Herengracht canal, The Hoxton is home to a quirky and eclectic restaurant-cum-bar that manages to stay true to its Dutch roots while still pushing the envelope on flavors. The interior decor of the bar at The Hoxton is what we would like to describe as “living room chic” – that is, filled with plenty of comfy sofas, overstuffed cushions, patterned rugs, bookcases and table lamps, which all ensure that visitors are as comfortable and relaxed as possible. The beer selection is small but perfectly formed, including libations from the USA, Netherlands, Germany and Italy and are a perfect compliment to the bar’s Dutch-style snacks (think Gouda cheese croquettes and bitterballen). The wine list is most impressive, featuring an international selection of reds, whites, sparkling wines, roses and champagnes, running the gamut from a moderately-priced Chenin Blanc to a somewhat more extravagant bottle of Dom Perignon Brut. Cocktails are split into five different categories: house tonics, Dutch (genever-based), sodas, sours and classics. Many include homemade syrups, like the Clover Club – gin, lemon, raspberry syrup and egg white – while others include top-shelf spirits and exotic flavours – like the Picante de la Casa; which combines premium tequila, chilli, lime, agave and coriander.
