With the friendly tagline “let’s meet on the corner”, this stylish venue, housed in a former municipal building, is an impressively versatile space. The corner in question is that of the Martelaarsgracht and the Prins Hendrikkade, and the venue is home to a multi-functional bar/restaurant/gallery space, a cool place to have a drink or two while admiring the work of local artists.
Visitors can either opt for a glass of their signature house beer or one of their inventive cocktails, many of which feature unusual aromatic ingredients like sage and violets. Potent house creations include the Whizz Bang, a heady blend of malt whiskey, Dolin De Chambery, Chambord, absinthe, and Peychaud bitters.
We like the sound (and the name) of the Freaky Monk, a sweet-sharp mix of vodka, grapefruit juice, Byrrh, and homemade spiced honey, and are intruiged by the Holy Viagra, a long drink made from tequila mixed with King’s Ginger – an old Dutch liqueur – chili, pineapple, lemon and ginger. It sounds capable of delivering quite a kick.
Those with sweet teeth might want to try the Velvet Symphony, a creamy concoction of Mozart White Chocolate, violet liqueur, vodka and lemon.
They also serve a wide range of spirits, beers, wines and classic cocktails. The kitchen serves a great array of cured meats and cheeses as well as more substantial dishes: soft shell crab, braised ox cheek, goat’s cheese ravioli and the like.
