In its own low-key way, The
Tara is one of the most romantic bars in Amsterdam. That might not be obviously
apparent as it can be crowded and noisy, but there are quiet corners to be
found.

The recently renovated space is something of a labyrinth with all manner
of alluring nooks. A collection of five very differently designed spaces, the
room with the two warming fireplaces is our favourite, the perfect place to
snuggle up on a chilly evening. There’s also a glamorous gold room which is
attractive albeit in a different way. Here you’ll find chandeliers and grand
golden plush banquettes – it’s all very theatrical, in the best way.

Originally
an English pub called O’ Henry’s, the sprawling space, built on the foundations
of an old convent, is hugely atmospheric. It can get a bit rowdy at times when
a games on – its popular with sports fans – but, given its size, you can
usually find a calmer spot somewhere inside. There’s the black stuff,
Caffrey’s, Murphy’s and cider all on tap. There’s also a sizeable dining room
and the food is pretty decent.
