De Nieuwe Anita
May 11, 2018
This hip, arty space began life as a bike storage room. From these unprepossessing beginning sprang a smart venue which regularly plays host to live bands, film screenings, and craft nights. There are poetry readings and regular open-mic sessions. Upstairs there’s a convivial bar area while downstairs there’s a stage and a performance space. The décor is vintage and a bit kitschy with battered Chesterfields, retro wallpaper, second-hand books galore and dangling accordion lamps; it’s a suitably quirky backdrop and it’s easy to see why the place is popular with the creative set: artists, musicians and media types can be found hanging out here. There’s an appealing hand-made collective vibe to the set up at De Nieuwe Anita, an engaging eclecticism which you’ll be pushed to find elsewhere. On the drinks front, they serve a decent range of cocktails, including the usual mojitos or cosmopolitans, as well as a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. Depending on the nature of the event, a small entrance fee might be charged, though Tuesdays are usually cover free. Mondays is movie night and it’s worth checking their website to see what’s coming up.
