Inspired by the bar scene of New Orleans, Bourbon Street is an Amsterdam favourite which has been going strong since it opened in 1990. With live music every night it’s popular with both musicians and music lovers and features an eclectic and exciting line up, everything from rock to blues to country to salsa. Some pretty impressive names have played here over the years including BB King and Sting, but part of the appeal of the place is in finding new talent, listening to great acts you’ve not encountered before, both local acts and musicians from further afield. Inside it’s a mishmash of memorabilia and old photographs, a Louisiana street lamp standing incongruously in the middle of things, a disco ball sharing ceiling space with some camp chandeliers. There’s a few stools dotted about and plenty of room for dancing; a stage area sits at one end of the room, topped with swags of red curtain, and this is where everyone’s attention is focussed not the bar. Despite the name, the drinks are secondary here. There’s a standard selection of beers on tap, a basic if solid wine selection, and the usual array of spirits. You don’t really come here for the drinks, they’re serviceable enough, but it’s the music that has people coming back to this place week after week, that and the lively and fun vibe.
