De Admiraal is one of the grandest and largest of Amsterdam’s tasting houses. These traditional venues, where you can taste a wide range of jenevers and other Dutch spirits, are part of the city’s distinctive drinking culture. Dating back to the late 18th century it’s far from the oldest such venue but it is not lacking in atmosphere or history. De Admiraal, being of a size, does double duty as a restaurant and party venue. If you’re looking for global brands you’d be better off elsewhere, but the range here is considerable. They stock some16 jenevers as well as 60 different liqueurs in all and the setting is rather lovely, the staff friendly and pleasant. Tasting sessions, which encompass a range of four different jenevers, not to mention attentive and informative service, are available if you want to try a variety of drinks, to compare and contrast, but you’re welcome to pop in for a sip and a snack too. There are a number of traditional Dutch dishes available and the place is popular with large groups looking to celebrate.
