Strand Zuid – zuid means south – is located right next to the Zuidas business district and as a result it tends to attract affluent business types along with a groomed and glamorous crowd made up of plenty of “Bekende Nederlanders” (Dutch celebrities). Decked out in red and white it still has a beach bar vibe, but a very upmarket one. The beach itself is an inviting stretch of sand overlooking a canal and the green of Beatrixpark, and dotted around this there are cool white awnings and plenty of elegant sofas and loungers on which you can relax with a chilled drink at your elbow. People often rock up by boat and hit the bar for a glass of bubbly. It’s that kind of place. They also serve a good selection of a beer and can whip up a decent cocktail. Try their Martini Royale, as it’s the one most in keeping with the sleek surroundings. If your wallet’s up to it, it’s worth hanging around for dinner as the modern European food is good, the wine list is worth exploring, and the place is great for people-watching.
