Boasting a dedicated absinthe bar, Brasserie Appelmans is a tiop place to grab a drink in Antwerp. Located next to the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, making it ideal for shoppers, it’s a modern space with bare brick walls and an abundance of dark wood. They serve a range of classic bistro style food (steaks, soups, sandwiches, salads, burgers and the like) as well delicious cocktails. The focus is very much on absinthe, though there’s a decent wine list too. From the cocktail list, the Porto is a pleasing mix of vodka, Port, Bols Butterscotch, Frangelico and Black Walnut bitters that’s perfect after dinner and they do a superior Espresso Martini. Be sure to save some room for dessert. Their Tarte Tatin is above reproach and they do a wicked, molten Moelleux au Chocolat.
