This atmospheric and stylish Viaduct bar likes to define itself as a mix of LA glam and NY cool and it’s not far off. Bungalow 8 is a hugely attractive space, with slatted bamboo ceilings that allow the room to be bathed in soft light. The colour scheme is muted and elegant yet warm, with plenty of comfy upholstered chairs and sofas to relax on, while fish tanks and large palms are dotted about the place, enhancing the West Coast vibe. There’s also a large outside patio to take advantage of warm evenings. Of their signature drinks, we’re drawn to their passion fruit mojito del perro or maybe, for a bit of a kick, their bloody spicy Joseph, a Bloody Mary with a wasabi kick. They also stock a good range of bubbles plus a wide array of New Zealand’s best wines. The atmosphere is seductive, the music smooth and the crowd are suitably glamorous. Food is meat and seafood heavy, with typical dishes including shredded beef tortillas, seafood skewers, jerk chicken wings, fried tropical plantains or vegetable roulade. It’s open early evening to late, with happy hours running from 4-7 when there’s a range of offers on cocktails, beer and wines. Entertainment comes courtesy of a selection of DJs playing funky house and electro pop and the place has attracted its fair share of celebrities Jason Timberlake has apparently been spotted as has, perhaps a little less coolly, Richard Branson. We can’t promise you’ll spot a star but you’re pretty much guaranteed a great night out.
