Rice is a gorgeous central city restaurant with great food, drink and design, so we just had to include it in our top Auckland night spots. A stalwart of the Auckland dining scene, it remains popular with the local Who’s Who and the odd visiting celebrity; expect a gorgeous space with sliding doors and expansive city views, with windows framed by live boxed grass. Walls of deep red and spring-coloured fabric add to the warmth, while funky seats and gorgeous multi-coloured light sculptures complete the designer glow. The highly recommended Asian fusion menu has a whacky international twist, with over 20 types or derivates of rice to choose from. We’d suggest trying the barbeque marinated eel omelette, the char sui pork belly, or the Red Thai duck curry, and make sure to save room for afters. The place offers a more interesting selection of desserts than most Asian restaurants tend to we’d be tempted by the berry tart with burnt honey and ginger ice cream or the Indonesian layer cake that comes with Pandan bubble jelly and mangosteen ice cream. As for the drinks, charming bar staff take time and care concocting a wide range of creations and they’re also more than happy to advise you on your choices, helping you match your drinks to your food selection. Naturally, in sticking to the rice theme, you should go for one of the various handpicked sakes. Then go for another, because one is never quite enough. Open most days till late (evenings only Saturdays) Rice is the perfect venue for a meal with friends or a date, where you can enjoy quality food and drink in style.
