Impossibly hip Auckland spot in the bar and nightclub heavy Ponsonby Road is a named not only for the spirit it celebrates but also in homage to the famous Whisky a Go Go, Sunset Strip, and it prides itself on being a premier live music venue as well as sophisticated drinking den.
The venue has a wide cocktail selection that leans as the name would suggest – towards whiskey but will have you humming ’til closing time whatever your mix (whisky enthusiasts beware it would be easy to spend a small fortune on the impressive selection of single malts).
Small, dark and cosy, with candlelit tables that suit the sophisticated 30-something professionals who make it home, the décor is slightly reminiscent of the W chain but with more quirks. Black and white photos of Sixties rock stars dot the spaces and dark leather banquettes that face each other in the main room make for easy conversation. What’s better, the trendy-to-kitsch lounge music is soft enough to hear yourself speak.
There are some 20 cocktails on the menu plus a selection of five summer specials that are constantly changing, with an emphasis on the classics done well.
Our recommendation? It has to be the Whiskey Sour in homage to the good boozer’s name. A tasty brew of whiskey, lemon, sugar syrup and egg white with a cherry in the bottom and a sugared rim, there was nothing sour about it. If you’re impressed, the place also holds its own ‘cocktail college’ where you can learn the mixologist’s magic.
