This bold, one-of a kind venue occupies a formerly rundown, three-storey building in the heart of Bangkok’s trendy Thonglor district and has become one of the hippest places to gather of an evening. Combining bar, restaurant and art space, Bad Motel has turned the “urban decay” look into an asset – half of the building remains dilapidated, with gaping holes that allows passersby to peer in and see young street artists creating graffiti on the walls upstairs. This is contrasted with a sleek, contemporary bar and restaurant on the ground floor – all whitewashed brick walls and minimalist furniture, and a welcoming garden out the back. The drinks list runs to several pages and features some pleasingly strong, and good value cocktails. Thai herbs and ingredients are used to create unique and tasty combinations, such as Hahaha Martini – Ketel One Vodka, home-made chilli liqueur, galangal and cumin powder and pickled grapes. And a happy hour running Sunday to Thursday from 5-8pm and offering two for the price of one makes them even more tempting. The bar snacks are inspired by traditional Thai street-food, with a modern twist, and are perfect for sharing with a hungry group. The soundtrack encompasses nu-disco, funk and old-school hip hop and there are regular art and photography exhibitions on show – look out for launch events when the rooftop bar is opened up and Bad Motel really becomes the place to be.
