Red Sky in Bangkok
May 11, 2018
Bangkok abounds with bars-with-views, the city’s rooftops throb with drinkers keen to soak up the spectacular skyline as they sip their drinks. While Vertigo remains the most famous, there is a clutch of new contenders, including Red Sky at the Centara Hotel. Based on the 55th floor the bar is blessed with the obligatory jaw-dropping views, but Red Sky is more reasonably priced than Vertigo and you could do dinner and drinks there with only relatively minor damage to your wallet. There’s a broad wine list, excellent cocktails, and a brief but to the point food menu which focuses on imported ingredients such as Maine lobster and French foie gras. The atmosphere is urban and chic, the food and drinks well above average and the views are incredible, the bar dominated by a great glowing arch that frames the city beyond, changing colour throughout the evening. Centara Hotel is part of the massive CentralWorld shopping mall, so once you’ve exhausted your credit card you can soar to the top of the mall to relax with dinner or a glass of something fortifying. Comfortable sofas are arranged around the circular tower; arrive early to grab one with the best view of the sun going down. You can even get a bird’s eye view of the nearby Grand Palace (mostly a sea of trees, but it’s something) and gaze out to the temples of Rattanakosin Island. As well as discerning travellers, the odd international royal is known to stop by here, so you might find yourself next to a real life prince at the bar.
