La Cala del Vermut
May 11, 2018
Located right next to Barcelona’s old gothic Cathedral (not La Sagrada Familia), La Cala del Vermut is one of three old-school vermuterias owned by the same family. These traditional tapas bars specialises in the red stuff, and there’s a great big barrel of their delicious citrus-scented vermouth sitting on the counter alongside an array of Spanish sausages and tasty jamon. Below this sits is a range of classic tapas, including some excellent patatas bravas and pimientos de padrón as well as chorizo in wine and pa amb tomaquet. There are a collection of old-fashioned seltzer bottles on the tables, so, if you so wish, you can splash a bit of soda water into your vermouth, and dilute it to taste. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and the vermouth really is something special. Served with a spear of olives and a plate of salty anchovies, a tipple here is a first class Barcelona experience.
