Run by an Irish couple from San Francisco, this attractive cocktail bar in Barca’s old town ticks all the right boxes. Opened in 2005, the space is elegant yet contemporary – filled with plush sofas, comfy cushions, and striking wallpaper (by 50s designer Florence Broadhurst), splashed with greens and oranges; it has apparently been designed to resemble a ‘millionaire’s drawing room’, though possibly not a modern millionaire. The drinks list has been put together with care and attention and the cocktails are well-made and pack a punch. They do a superior Porn Star Martini and their Whisky Savage, with Jameson whiskey, lemon, lime and sugar, gives an extra citrus twist to a standard whisky sour and they’re certainly reasonably priced, with a whole range of drinks available at 5 Euros a pop. Their signature La Leche, a martini with chocolate liqueur and espresso, veers deliciously close to dessert territory. The wine list is sufficient rather than extensive but chosen with a good eye, and though they only have a couple of beers on draft there’s a good selection of bottles. Besides, it’s really all about the cocktails here. An eclectic food menu focuses on locally sourced produce (much of it from nearby Boqueria Market). The very popular ‘recovery brunch’ is served from 10-4 daily (complete with cocktails, if you need some hair of the dog to aid said recovery), while dinner runs from early evening. Burgers, pizzas and sandwiches feature heavily; expect classics with a bit of a twist rather than wildly original cuisine. A fantastic place for a cool, slightly quirky night out.
