At first glimpse Torre Rosa isn’t your typical sophisticated Barcelona cocktail bar, but don’t be tempted to discount it too quickly. Yes, there are pinball machines, a darts board and plasma screens scattered throughout the place, but there’s also a drinks list that’s been put together with care. Housed in an old-style Barcelona house, the sprawling venue is spread over two floors and has an agreeably casual atmosphere, a perhaps welcome contrast to some of the city’s more self-consciously stylish hang outs. With tiled floors and lots of wood and brick on display, it’s pleasant without feeling like it’s been overly designed. The interior is colourful and bright with a spacious, tree-lined heated seating area outside, ideal for drinking under the stars on a warm evening. The bar is impressively well stocked with quality spirits and there’s a good range of cocktails on offer, as well as a decent selection of wines and beers on tap and by the bottle they also do the classics very well, with the gin and tonic (made with Plymouth Gin) coming highly recommended. Staff are friendly in a relaxed, casual way, but they’re also very good at their jobs, and the drinks are put together with skill. The venue also regularly hosts cocktail making master classes and wine tastings, as well as being a popular spot for private parties and events. It’s unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere might not be a draw for cooler-than-thou urbanites, but for everyone else, cast aside your assumptions and realise that Torre Rosa offers a great night out.
