Commune by the Great Wall
May 11, 2018
No false advertising here – as the name suggests, this exquisitely designed hotel is located by one of the most astonishing man-made creations on the planet, the Great Wall of China. It might seem folly to even try to compete with your location when it’s a battle you’re bound to lose, but Commune has somehow managed to pull off being a complement to its setting it’s hardly surprising that it’s won a host of architecture awards both nationally and internationally since it opened. Surrounded by mountains and lush forest, the distinctive, cubist building all hard, sharp lines, yet somehow surprisingly warm has become an icon of a new, outward-looking China, with various parts of the complex being designed by different architects and designers yet somehow managing to be a cohesive style statement. There’s now a host of tourist villas on site, a Kid’s Club and a luxurious spa for visitors to enjoy, while the central club house contains both the fine Courtyard restaurant and the hotel’s lounge bar, which is as sleek and stylish as the rest of the building. It’s not cheap nor would you expect it to be, but the surroundings alone are worth paying for, and if you allow yourself only one bit of luxury when you’re on holiday we’d say this is the one to go for because it’s an experience worth paying for. The wine list features both Chinese and international wines and there’s a glorious terrace where you can head with your glass and lose yourself in that unforgettable view. Go on, treat yourself.
