Appropriately for a venue named after the Egyptian god of atmosphere, the first thing you notice about the split-level Shu is its style and modern ambience. The cocktail bar and club part of this fantastic award-winning venue ß-to be found in a Victorian terrace on Belfast’s trendy Lisbon Road is located in the basement of the building. While the comfortable 90-seater restaurant upstairs is light and airy, downstairs is intimate and moody, coupling dark wood and leather seating. This is where the serious drinking takes place, either pre-dinner or if you want your night to go on for as long as possible. The drinks menu is impressive, mixing time-tested classics with signature cocktails. If you fancy something light and fruity, try a Shubreeze (vodka, cranberry and grapefruit). Meanwhile, the Zoolander (a combination of Triple Sec, Grenadine, fruit liqueurs and juices) is a good choice if you’re in the mood to strut your stuff. Shots and champagne cocktails will add a kick or a touch of class to your evening. The staff are friendly and efficient and the bill won’t break the bank. And if you’re feeling peckish, don’t neglect the food. After 6:30pm they up the stakes, wheeling out some fine fresh shellfish platters, oysters and sushi to accompany your tipple. The food upstairs is also fantastic, from pork belly to pigeon and everything in between. And Shu’s array of mouth-watering desserts might just be enough to tempt you away from your drinking for an hour or so of deliciously gluttonous eating.
