Hotel bars can sometimes be much of a muchness, corporate and bland and simply a place to kill time. Not so The Atrium Lobby Lounge & Bar at the Radisson Blu Hotel Berlin, which we can safely say is like no other hotel bar you’ve ever seen. For a start, the minute you enter this striking hotel lobby your eyes are inevitably drawn upwards, and you may suddenly feel like you’re in a science fiction movie. Because the bar is located underneath a dramatic ‘AquaDom’ essentially a vast fish-tank, some 25 metres high and filled with 1500 tropical fish, it’s an incredible (and slightly disconcerting) sight. (Trivia fans may wish to know that it’s the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium and uses one million litres of seawater). Open all day, it’s otherwise – despite this incredible centrepiece – quite a conventional lobby bar where people tend to stop for coffee and home-made cake in the afternoons or, later on, for a cocktail and a snack to kick off their Berlin evening in considerable style. Cocktails include all the classics but the offer the occasional quirky option: try the Toblerone (which includes in the ingredients vodka and Baileys), or the delicious ginger Mojito (the place does a delightfully fruity selection of mojitos and Caipirinhas, including mango, blackberry and raspberry). You could also order the Freddy Funpucker, just don’t try to say it too fast (tequila, orange juice and Galliano, if you’re wondering) though in such a stylish setting we’d probably plump for one of the classy champagne cocktails.
