Bebel Bar and Lounge
May 11, 2018
Housed in Berlin’s super-swanky Hotel de Rome, Bebel is a chic and elegant place to kick off your evening. Located in Bebelplatz, off Unter den Linden, so nicely central for those who want to do the touristy things, it’s also a smart drinking hole. The nineteenth century building is a former bank (the headquarters of Dresdner Bank, no less), and the interior is as high-ceilinged and grand as that implies; dark-walled and atmospherically lit, the bar boasts sleek metal furnishings, acres of smart, dark wood and velvet cushions, with numerous comfy black armchairs in which to lounge with a drink. The crowd is international, well-groomed and grown up and service is of the highly polished, black-tie variety, so expect to be charged accordingly. The cocktails have gained a reputation as some of the best in Berlin, well-made concoctions with fresh ingredients like basil and cucumber mixing with less obvious choices like Balsamic vinegar and rose. The bar stocks the usual suspects but also some lesser known brands be sure to ask what’s on offer. Suitably smooth music is played live on occasion, and the bar is open till 1am most nights, so don’t be in any hurry to go home. The hotel also has a restaurant with an external terrace, serving Mediterranean style food, and stylish Opera Court, which is a popular spot for afternoon tea and worth checking out for the architecture alone, as it still boasts its original glazed ceiling. Plus, of course the stylish and central setting makes it an ideal spot from which to explore the city.
