N.N. Train Cocktail Bar
May 11, 2018
So you think subways are dingy and smelly? Not this train, baby. (In fairness, of course, we should point out that Berlin’s actual underground trains aren’t dingy and smelly, either, which can come as a shock if you’re used to the fetid transport in London or New York). This retired railway carriage is now doing sterling service as a hip cocktail bar in Schoneburg, serving top quality drinks to the local hipsters. Like any subway, it does get crowded, though you can always grab a seat outside during rush hour, as there’s an outdoor patio area that’s perfect for warmer days (or hardier types – the Germans tend not to be wimpy about the weather). They’ve eschewed the clinical subway style for a sort of funky, budget Orient Express wooden seats at adjoining booths, a metallic ceiling lending a glow. If you’re one of the lucky 50 or so souls who managed to nab a seat inside, feel free to stay for the duration as service goes into the early hours (Berlin, like many European cities, doesn’t really get started till later). There’s also a pleasant early evening vibe, though, especially on sunny days, if you want to start your evening there rather than end it. Drinks are very reasonable even by the standard of a city that still has a reputation for good value, and there are regular drinks promotions on weeknights, when if you’re lucky you can bag a cocktail for around 5 Euro. The ambience is second to none, and the staff are friendly, making this a top Berlin spot for chilling with a drink in hand. Next stop? N N Train.
