The lavishly decorated Reingold is another chic, upmarket bar in Mitte, a district unrecognizable from its grey East Berlin days. Thirty-something dot.com execs and their computer creative comrades lounge around on comfy leather stools and couches, overlooked by striking wall art that dominates one side of the bar. Billing itself as ß-an old speakeasy for the modern centuryß-, this ‘designed to the max’ venue is a pleasing mix of contemporary chic and old fashioned charm, offering up an excellent selection of cocktails and bar food in a super stylish setting. There’s a long bar and plenty of seating in this spacious venue that nevertheless manages a warm, welcoming ambience. Reingold is one of the best bars in the neighbourhood, making it a popular choice for the local sophisticates despite its appeal it seems to be under the tourist radar, giving you the extra buzz of feeling like you’ve stumbled on a secret. Given its target audience, it’s reasonably priced, though with a décor like this it’s clearly not aiming at the bargain basement crowd. Open Tuesday through Saturdays evenings only, weekends see the place hopping to live DJ sets, playing a mix of jazz, swing and hip hop to a trendy crowd. The cocktails are well-made by friendly, knowledgeable bar tenders if you can’t see what you want on the menu, just ask and they are happy to make a recommendation, and there’s some quirky and little known brands tucked away behind the bar, so it’s always worth experimenting. So why not pop down to Mitte and take in the atmosphere at this gem of a bar?
