Located inside the Commonwealth hotel in the heart of Boston’s bustling Kenmore Square, The Hawthorne combines crafted cocktails and the classy comfort of a stylish living room to come up with something truly unique in the Boston cocktail scene. The brainchild of legendary Boston beverage director Jackson Cannon, it all starts with the decor at The Hawthorne, as it is of the ‘upmarket-living-room’ variety, making entering feel like strolling into your stylish friend’s amazing new home. Bespoke bookshelves, globes, black-and-white photos, and extremely comfortable animal print couches set the tone and immediately put you in the mood to settle in for a round or two of drinks. The drink list at Hawthorne has been pared down over the years, but that isn’t due to lack of popularity, quite the opposite in fact – it was simply a desire to focus on a dedicated set of cocktails, rotating in and out established favorites and new creations. While the resulting cocktail list isn’t as extensive as some other bars, the drinks they offer are crafted with a rarefied level of expertise. Recent additions to the cocktail menu like the Air Mail – honey, lime, rum, and sparkling wine – and the Beacon and Beam – Irish Whiskey, rum, sherry, citrus, and bitters – exemplify the creativity on display behind the bar and all pair well with their posh bar bites like soft pretzels. Recently recognized as one of the best bars in America by Esquire magazine, it will only take you a few sips to see why.
