Touted to become the Buddha Bar of Brussels, Khnopff is in many ways an improvement. Designed by Miguel Martins who created both Buddha Bar and Manray, it has the same flamboyant flourishes: mosaic-topped tables stand beneath purple walls and suspended lamps while a seemingly endless bar caters for a crush of about 150 immaculately hip and groomed people. Vast concrete pillars plunge into wooden floors and lilting Parisan-style lounge bar music plays from surround sound speakers to an impressionable crowd. Like Buddha Bar and the Schrager hotels it is largely a triumph of style over substance, but redeemed somewhat by the fact that the dishes and drinks aren’t as pricey and the people are actually nicer. Khnopff was a famous Belgian painter and this building on Saint Bernard is where he worked.
