La Bodega, the hip lounge bar and restaurant at the Balmoral, is one of the coolest places in Cairo. Split into separate dining and drinking areas, it’s an atmospheric space decorated with lots of dark wood, very Belle Epoque. The lights are kept seductively (and flatteringly) low and there are excellent (if stiffly priced) drinks to be had. It’s worth scoring a table in the dining room if you can as the European-influenced food is seriously good too. The crowd consists of Cairo’s fashionable set, eager to see and be seen, and soft music pulses in the background. A reservation is definitely recommended.
