Cape Town’s most famous hotel is all old money, colonial elegance and a certain air of snobbery, but new bar Planet has given the Mount Nelson something of a chic, sexy edge. A stylish mirror-filled space with black-and-white tiled floors and elegant purple and brown upholstered seats, it’s a hit with moneyed Capetonians and trendy tourists here to sample exotic cocktails and a variety of French champagnes. A twinkling ceiling of fibre-optic light adds to the allure, but you could always take a seat in the magnificent garden terrace outside with a view of the real stars in the African night sky above you.
