Nico – owned by James Beard winner Paul Kahan and located on the ground level of the snazzy new Thompson Hotel – is a chic Mediterranean-inspired restaurant which serves a nice line in creative fish and seafood dishes. The bar part of the operation, Salone Nico, boasts a well-curated spirits programme and is a modern yet stylish space, with purple and grey sofas, warm wood panelling and a verdant wall behind the bar. There are further bar and dining areas dotted around the two-level space, all equally attractive. The cocktail menu features a range of Italian favourites, as well as a number of original tipples; vermouth-based drinks are very much to the fore here, drinks like the refreshing Snowbird blends Luxardo Apertivio, gin, Punt e Mes, fresh citrus and soda – it’s light and delicate, the perfect thing to drink before dinner, something which applies to many of their liquid offerings. The wine list has been put together with evident care and the Coravin system enables them to offer a range of more adventurous (and expensive) wines by the glass. While you can just stop in for a drink it’s definitely worth seeing what the kitchen is capable of. House made pasta and the freshet fish feature on the food menu and their breakfast options are also well worth your time.
