Honey Butter Fried Chicken
May 11, 2018
The name is enough to get your mouth watering. The hotly anticipated Honey Butter had already acquired a rep before it opened thanks to its owners’ famed Sunday Dinner Club. Now they’ve set up shop permanently and expanded the menu to include a dinky cocktail list. First things first though, that chicken is the business: sweet, crisp, and delicious. The birds are well-sourced and the meat double battered in buttermilk and sprinkled with smoked paprika salt. The results are deeply savoury and seriously moreish. Sides include exemplary corn muffins and a pimento mac’n’cheese but really this place is all about the chicken. Accompany your chicken fix with a pitcher of Hill Pop, a house-made lemonade spiked with Bourbon, or their Damn Good Sweet Tea, which is tea with white whiskey and honey. It is, as you may have guessed, damn good. If you’re going solo, the spicy Coriander Sangrita is definitely worth your attention, a tequila based drink made even more potent with a dash of Co-op Rum Barrel Hot Sauce. The smoked paprika shows up again in the Smokey Derby, along with bourbon and grapefruit, and the Avondale Ginger Mule is sweetened with a lick of molasses. There are also a range of beers available, canned and bottled both, and some intriguing sodas and iced teas, including Goose Island root beer, Boylan’s black cherry and a rotating selection of iced teas from Rare Tea Cellar.
