The Barrelhouse Flat
May 11, 2018
There are very many reasons to love Barrelhouse Flat. These guys do a great range of specialized whiskey and gin drinks, but they also do a fine line in bubbly beverages (we do love us some bubbles). The work of bartender Stephen Cole formerly of the acclaimed Violet Hour the bar offers an exhaustive list of classic cocktails and a menu of superior pub grub. Whiskey drinkers will want to try the Boothby Cocktail, a smooth mix of bourbon, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters topped with champagne. Rum lovers should try the Airmail, a tasty union of rum, honey, lemon and more of the bubbly stuff. And brandy-philes should opt for the Jimmie Roosevelt, a blend of cognac, green chartreuse, Demerara syrup, Angostura bitters, and champagne. The upstairs parlour is more intimate than the louder, pubbier room below, the kitchen serves great small plates – think soy-caramel glazed wings with cucumber kimchi – and the prices are pretty reasonable given the standard.
