Lost Lake is a colourful tropical explosion of a bar. The tiki-inspired lounge, the work of the majestically bearded Paul McGee, formerly of Three Dots and a Dash, is not as swish as that River North favourite, rather it’s a laid-back friendly place that’s deservedly garnered a loyal following since opening. The décor ticks all the tiki boxes – there’s big, bold banana-leaf paper on the walls, a piranha tank by the door plus an abundance of rattan and bamboo; reggae beats play in the background, and the cocktail list is full of potent tiki drinks. The signature cocktail, the Lost Lake, is a wonderful thing, a heady mix of aged Jamaican rum, passion fruit, pineapple, maraschino and Campari, both bitter and sweet. The Hula Hips of Heaven, a blend of tequila and mezcal blended with falernum, absinthe, grapefruit and lime, delivers a pretty stiff kick but it tastes divine. Most of the cocktails are served in cool tiki vessels. As if that weren’t enough there’s a curated selection of around 275 rums behind the bar and Chinese-American bar snacks. This place is already pretty popular and it’s on the small side so rock up early to ensure you can nab a table.
