Chicago-Near North Side

There are many reasons to visit Downtown’s Luxbar. It’s a handsome, light, bright space with chequer board floors, large sunny windows and an appealing patio area out front. It also boasts a Build-Your-Own Manhattan bar, which allows you to DIY the classic American cocktail, learning about the components of the drink in the process. Choose your base spirit and your vermouth, even customise your ice, to create a perfect version, tailored to your tastes. Experiment with layering, with flavour notes and the different profiles of different vermouths, mixing and matching from a range of 20 possible ingredients. Fun as this is, don’t neglect their other speciality cocktails. Grandma’s Gingerbread blends rum, with organic ginger snap liqueur, cream, and averna amaro, while the Panacea No 2 is a soothing yet smoky mix of Chivas Regal 18yr with organic earl grey tea, fresh lemon and orange juices. We also really, really like the sound of the Fallen Leaves, a blend of gin, xante, organic pear nectar, fresh lime and aromatic bitters. There’s a wide range of beers on offer too, including Milk Nitro Stout and the house Luxlager on draft, a light-bodied delicate brew that’s supremely easy to drink. On the food front they offer a large array of salads, sandwiches and burger, including some seriously good filet mignon sliders.
