The Berkshire Room, Acme Hotel’s incredibly attractive new craft cocktail spot, a new venture by the Fifty50 Group, boasts an exciting beverage programme by Benjamin Schiller. The white, high ceilinged room puts the bar front and centre, with seating on either side. It’s an airy, elegant space, with chequerboard floors echoing the venue’s1920s origins. Antique spirits bottles and cut crystal punchbowls are lovingly displayed around the room and the whole operation is very service driven. Sure they serve inventive, creative drinks, but if you just want something simple, a basic vodka and tonic, say, they’ll do that for you too; the focus is on craft and care without the attitude, on giving the customer what they want even isn’t hip or on-trend. What is on trend is their barrel aged cocktails; there are five on the menu including a Manhattan and a Vieux Carre. The Weston combines bourbon, tobacco and coffee a trinity you just can’t argue with – while the Nepi pairs Amaro with honey and prosecco for an aromatic sweet-savoury experience. It’s worth trying the ß-Dealer’s Choice,ß- option in which you can pick your favourite spirit and flavour profile – fruity, herbaceous, smoky, and so forth and then let the bartenders do their thing. Drinks are served in gorgeous antique glassware (they’re big on that here) and there’s something really special about having a drink tailored to your personal tastes.
