The Sangria at Mercat is one of the best in town. There are different varieties available and they all use fresh herbs and ingredients, things like tarragon and bay leaves, resulting in an all together more comlex and interesting tipple than you might usually expect from this drink. They even offer a Sangria flight if you can’t make up your mind. The menu also encompasses a range of Catalan-inspired cocktails, of which the Matador, a blend of gin, beets, lime, thyme, and ginger ale, is layered and complex thing. The Sombra, meanwhile, a mix of dark rum, mesquite-habanero agave, lime has a pleasing kick to it. The wine list focuses on the North West of Spain and contains a number of unfamiliar options. There’s a wine flight if you want to explore what the region has to offer and they also serve a nice line in cava. Food-wise we’re talking lots of tasty piggy bits, paella, and grilled meat and fish the ‘a la planxa’ part. A whole roast sucking pig is available for large groups if you order in advance. The lively venue itself is spread over two levels, but it’s the tucked-away lounge-bar on the lower floor, you’ll want to seek out as its more atmospheric and intimate by far, a bit like something you might stumble across in an old Spanish town, sun-warmed, all oranges and browns.
