If you’re looking for a place to hear live music in Hyde Park where the drinks are not an afterthought then you need to check out The Promontory, the new venue from Empty Bottle’s Bruce Finkelman and Craig Golden, of Space in Evanston. This new multi-purpose venue is spread over two levels and conveniently located near the University of Chicago. Upstairs, there are DJ sets and live music nights, sometimes jazz, sometimes the blues. Elsewhere in the building there’s an attractive drinking and dining room, a light, bright space with a distinctive ceiling, offering “hearth to table” cuisine, which means dishes like Appalachian pork stew and quail in a tomato broth. At the bar, they offer a range of original, signature cocktails including the lush sounding Promontory Paloma, a blend of blanco tequila, hearth-charred grapefruit, lime, and mint, and a Jamaican Old Fashioned, which uses rum instead of bourbon and pairs it with La Colombe coffee bitters. Desserts are worth saving room, particularly the decadent s’mores soufflé.
