Never has a cocktail bar-cum-nightclub had such an incongruous and concealed entrance as The Cage. An unmarked door on the Rathenauplatz in Cologne camouflages this multi-level venue and what lies behind is definitely somewhat of a surprise. Taking the ‘cage’ theme and running with it, the creators have filled the space with shining metal bars and mirrored walls – the DJ booth is even an actual cage in the middle of the dancefloor – yet soften this with plush brown leather sofas, ambient lighting and Art Deco style table lamps to create an eclectic and exciting drinks and music venue. Cocktails at The Cage were always going to be something of a delight as the whole venue has been headed up by the creator of one of Cologne’s other trendy nightspots (Shepheard) and the drinks list lives up to billing with delights like the Persian Buck – gin, flavored with thyme, ginger beer, orange, lime and topped with homemade saffron cotton candy – and an energizing signature drink made of vodka topped with coffee and apricot – perfect for those feeling the midnight slump. There’s also top-shelf spirits, bubbles and a selection of cocktails perfect for sharing, served up in a unique glass decanter with pouring spouts for each glass. Table reservations are recommended for groups and visitors should also keep an eye out for The Cage’s schedule of party and holiday events (in the past the Halloween and Gatsby-themed evenings have been a real hit).
