Taking its inspiration from London’s pubs, the Ten Bells – the name is a reference to a once notorious East End drinking pit that’s now enjoying something of a renaissance thanks in part to a residency by hip chef collective, the Young Turks is a dinky bar in in the Bishop Arts District with real character, serving Brit-inspired food alongside a great range of beers and ciders. The kitchen serves classic pub grub like fish and chips, house pickled eggs and the artery-furring Ten Bells Butty (a carb fest of chips, cheddar and bread that’s so wrong it’s right), along with po’boys, jumbo wings, short ribs and grilled cheese sandwiches dishes perfect for pairing with a cool pint of beer. The laid back Anglophile vibe is hugely appealing, and the owners and bar staff are friendly and welcoming, making this place a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. There are revolving local brews on tap and a large patio area where, on nights when the weather behaves itself, they even have a small stage area which occasionally plays host to live music. It’s also a great weekend brunch spot.
