Opened back in 2005, the Windmill Lounge is the kind of spot to which bartenders go to hang out. This is a good sign. It’s one of the top cocktail craft spots in Dallas, a trend-setter not a trend hopper. The Dallas scene wouldn’t be what it is today were it not for the Windmill. Owner Louise Owen (cofounder and Owen’s fomer husband, Charlie Papaceno now runs his own place) knows her drinks and this laid back dive bar serves superior cocktails alongside basic beers and shots. They know there’s no room for snobbery at the best bars.
There’s no dress code, drinks are named after regulars, they screen the big games, and there’s regular karaoke and DJ nights – and a cool neon windmill on the roof. Don’t come expecting cutting edge mixology but if you want a magnificent Manhattan or a brilliantly made Negroni, this is your place. The vibe is kind of divey but in the best way and the atmosphere is all part of the place’s appeal; it’s a welcoming, neighbourhood bar that just happens to knock out classic cocktails like a boss.
