There’s an old colonial feel to the Balcony Bar, which is located in the five-star, 43 floor Shangri-La Hotel in the heart of Dubai’s business district. The sumptuous interior features an abundance of rich, coffee coloured wood, brown leather armchairs and sofas, a panelled ceiling and oriental rugs aplenty, all evidently designed to hark back to the classic elegance of old Shanghai. And elegant it certainly is, although in a rather masculine, old boys’ club manner. The bar doesn’t actually have a balcony but, as the name suggests, it does overlook the chic hotel lobby, so you’re well-placed for a bit of well-heeled people watching. But a bar like this is really all about some serious enjoyment of the finer things in life, perhaps while discussing the ß-good old daysß- or making business deals, and it doesn’t disappoint. There’s a very decent drinks list featuring the usual suspects, including some classic cocktails well executed, as well as vintage whiskeys, wine and champagne. And in true men’s club style a selection of cigars is also on offer the bar accommodates both smoking and non-smoking guests. The place may have just a touch of the hotel bar vibe, but in spite of this it doesn’t feel overly stuffy and is the ideal place to stop in for an aperitif or a night cap. And if you find that Balcony doesn’t really float your boat you can always drift across to one of the hotel’s other offerings either the funky Ikandy Ultralounge or the somewhat more feminine Lobby Lounge.
