No prizes for guessing which floor of Dubai’s Grosvenor House Hotel Bar 44 is located on. It’s high up 44 floors high up in fact, in case you were still wondering – and is therefore blessed with superb views over Dubai’s ever shifting, ever developing skyline. And as the sun goes down you’ll find the chic, moneyed crowd heading up here to soak up the high life, in every sense of the word. The décor is low-key retro with deep, soft as butter leather bucket chairs, tufted banquettes, and a spectacular circular bar. Every touch, from the subdued candle-light to the plush furnishings and in-house pianist tinkling the ivories, has been perfectly pitched. Service is exemplary, whisper quick, and ultra efficient. Continuing with the theme, there are 44 different champagnes on offer, available by the glass right up to the enormous Nebuchadnezzar equal to 20 ordinary bottles (yes, it sounds obscenely flash to us too but this is Dubai..). There’s also a vast array of classic cocktails, which are whipped up with a certain flair, although they tend to be a little heavy on the ice and light on the actual alcohol. Prices are predictably nose-bleed inducing indeed, this is one of the most expensive places to drink in the city – but it’s still a bar worth hitting to sip one drink (making sure to take your sweet time about it) and to soak up the one of the best views available of this most futuristic of cities as night falls.
